Well got the original display up and running nicely. Still need to get the I2C cleaned up a little bit more but builds nicely under IAR and Atmel Studio (so GCC). The display is running a MEGA8, which seems plenty powerful enough for the limited amount that it needs to do. The CPU is actually not much more expensive than 2 x 74HC595 (well if you use the DIL versions and you don't buy in lots of 1000 from Element14 -- $2.85 Vs $1.17 x 2). It also offloads some processing from the main oscillator...
